Advert For Carnaby's Safety Gas Apparatus reverse
Medium: Print on paper
Gas was the main means by which the home was heated and lit during the 19th century. When they were first introduced burners could be noisy, smelly and quite dangerous and so safety apparatus such as that advertised on this leaflet would have been very popular. Fire was the greatest hazard in the home at this time, materials were light and layered and if a lady brushed a burner her clothes could have easily caught light.
