The Coal Mines Act of 1872 introduced safer working conditions for miners, a minimum age of employment of 10 years, and a maximum working day of 10 hours. Education was to be provided for all boys up to the age of 15. There were now more regular safety inspections in collieries, and miners were to be paid by weight of coal collected.
