The idea of a 'shopfront' was developed during the 19th century. Ornamental ironwork and decorated interiors appeared and some of the shops in Regent Street were built with their structural support on the inside, precisely so that their fronts could be easily altered to suit fashionable trends. The actual size of the glass windows increased by 50%, and this encouraged shop keepers to find inventive ways of displaying their stock. Customers really did 'Window shop', gazing in awe at the goods inside.
