Most respectable people hated ready made clothing when it was first produced in the 19th Century, preferring to visit tailors and dressmakers to have their clothing specially made, this however was not available to everyone, many could not afford to visit these specialist craftsmen. Clothiers introduced new and unorthodox practices, they sold mass produced garments like trousers and shirts, they attached price tags to the clothes and refused to haggle over the value of these items (haggling was common practice before this time), and they allowed customers to browse ‘without obligation’.
