Advert for WJ Bush, Essential Oil seller
Medium: Print on paper
Since the beginning of history, aromatic plants and their oils have been used as perfumes, antiseptics, cosmetics, flavouring for cooking and as medicine. A belief in the restorative properties of essential oils developed throughout the 19th century, with lavender being the most popular. By the end of the century, however, essential oils had lost their popularity in favour of more straightforwardly 'scientific' remedies, and were generally only marketed thereafter by perfumiers.
