Before the invention of the sewing machine all stitching had to be done by hand. This was a lengthy and laborious task: stitching the pieces of a full-size dress could take up to three days. Women worked for many hours for very little pay but the invention of the sewing machine transformed the textile industry, making the work much faster and making elaborate and inventive designs much easier to achieve.
