Typical furnishings in the middle and upper class home of the 19th century were bulky and ornate pieces characterised by curving lines and rounded shapes. At the start of the period pieces were often so intricate with carvings of fruits or animals that they lost their functionality completely. By the end of the period there was a desire for more practical and comfortable furniture and large upholstered sofas appeared for the first time. Harrington’s Cradle Spring Chairs would have been very desirable for image conscious Victorians.
