As many as 125,000 journals and periodicals were in print in Britain by the end of the 19th century. The growth of the professional and clerical classes, combined with a general ethos of social reform and self improvement, created a market for light reading on almost every thinkable topic. The cost of manufacturing paper had come down in the mid-century and new machinery was invented that allowed inexpensive mass printing for the first time.
'Rare Bits' was a journal along the lines of the modern Reader's Digest in that it took submissions from professional and amateur writers.
