When newspaper editors wanted to sell more copies of their paper, they would often produce special "commemorative" issues or illustrated supplements. The introduction of chromolithography made printing detailed coloured pictures possible for the first time. Developments in printing technology meant that these images could be easily reproduced thousands of times. These illustrated supplements were often enormous, sometimes reaching four feet in length, but they were folded to fit in to the central pages of the newspaper itself. Panoramic views, such as this one of Tower Bridge, were particularly popular.
