It was expensive to buy novels in the 19th century, especially when they were first published, and 'Penny novels' provided cheap and entertaining alternatives. They often had clear target audiences, like this one for 'the lady'. Stories were based on romantic ideals and were a form of escapism. By collecting the stories, readers cold develop their own libraries. The reverse of the pamphlet has an advertisment for publications entitled 'How to dance' and 'Fancy Basket Work'.
