'The Graphic' was an illustrated weekly newspaper established in 1869 by William Luson Thomas, who felt that illustrations had the power to influence public opinion on political issues. Articles in the newspaper were thought to be reliable accounts of events, and this idea was enhanced by the use of large and very detailed illustrations. Highly successful artists were employed to draw the pictures. The magazine was often used as a forum to advance social reform and included discussions on the Poor Law, the Factory Acts and conditions in the mining industry.
