The Victorian period saw many challenges to Christianity. Popular philosophies of materialism and rationalism dominated society bringing into question many of the Church's teachings and Darwin's 'Theory of Evolution' contradicted the Bible stories of creation. However at the same time religion was being endorsed very actively by missionaries, theologians and pastors. Charles Haddon Spurgeon, the religious leader named on this leaflet, a lay preacher from Kelvedon in Essex became a popular preacher in London. He built the Metropolitan Tabernacle in Elephant and Castle. Religious periodicals such as 'The Christian' would have formed a central part of the average Victorian's everyday reading material.
