Date: 1881
This is an advertisement for the Vegetarian Journal. There is a common misconception that vegetarianism a modern 'fad' but as early as 1807, the Reverend William Cowherd, in Salford, advocated the principle of not eating meat. The Vegetarian Society was founded in 1847 and by the 1880s vegetarian restaurants were popular in London, offering cheap and nutritious meals in respectable settings. The sort of food available to most vegetarians then was quite plain, magazines rarely printed any recipes, instead they printed 'testimonies' from individual vegetarians who believed their diet was responsible for their good health.
