Advert For 'The Royal Shakespere', Serial
Printer: Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co
Medium: Pencil on paper
This is an advertisement for a 19th century serial entitled The Royal Shakespere. Books and novels were expensive at this time because they were bound, this meant that it was usually only the upper and middle classes who had access to books in libraries; periodicals were a cheap alternative. Stories and plays, like those of William Shakespeare, started to be printed and sold in parts in periodicals, this meant that many more people had access to them.
