This is an advertisement for the Magic Lantern Periodical. There were many thousands of periodicals published during the 19th century and publications containing serialised stories and detailed illustrations were especially popular with families. The periodicals would be read aloud in the home as part of the evening’s entertainment and the publication of each edition would be eagerly awaited. A magic lantern was in the 19th century a very popular and modern machine that used 2 images projected by synchronised lanterns, which slowly moved from one to the other, to create the illusion of movement.
