During the 18th century, it had been fashionable for women to wear huge towering wigs with small muslin or lace adornments, but in the 19th century the fashion completely changed. Poke bonnets became very popular, and as the century progressed styles towards the small and decorative generally.

Ribbons that had been the sole preserve of men in the 17th century were now fashionable among women. Men started to wear their hair shorter, and silk was the most fashionable and expensive hat covering of the time.
