This is an advertisement for the Gamlen Brothers juvenile outfitters store in Devonport, Plymouth. Toddlers and young boys were often dressed in dresses like girls. Commonly the only difference between the sexes was the hairstyle or the colour of a sash. The age at which a boy started to wear trousers differed depending on the status and wealth of the family but it was usually between the ages of 4 and 5. Once a boy had been 'breeched' he would be taken to an outfitters like the one featured on this leaflet. School uniforms had an impact on the styles of the boy's suits and Norfolk and Eton suits were popular.
