Advert For An Egyptian Exhibition At The Niagra Hall, Westminster
Printer: Upton, James
Medium: Print on paper
This very colourful leaflet is advertising an exhibition of Egyptian artefacts at the Niagara Hall in Westminster. After the French army were defeated in Egypt in 1801 the country came under the control of Mohammed Ali Pasha, the Turkish viceroy. He opened up Egypt to foreign diplomats and businessmen and especially to tourists. From this time wealthy Victorians travelled to Egypt and brought back many beautiful artefacts as well as writing about their experiences on their travels. It became very popular to attend Egyptian exhibitions and lectures and to decorate ones home with Egyptian styled furnishings.
