Printers in the 19th century usually worked 12-hour days under considerable strain. An apprenticeship lasted seven years, pay was low and there was no limit to the number of apprentices that a master could have, so child labour was frequently used. At the same time, printers were seen as better off than the average industrial worker of the period. Training brought opportunities to meet clients face-to-face, and once training was completed a worker could set up his own business.
