Jewellery styles changed greatly over the course of the 19th century. At first, fashionable jewellery was light, delicate and often mimetic of nature - taking the form of flowers and animals, for example. When Queen Victoria ascended to the throne, she helped create a fashion for matching necklaces and earrings. When Victoria went into morning after the death of her husband, Albert, she wore dark mourning jewellery, and smaller, more discreet items became fashionable with the public.
