As well as advertising the stars appearing at the South London Palace, this poster also highlights the excellence of the sets and scenery. The stages at the Palace were a mass of slides, bridges, traps and sections that could be broken down into pieces. Small-scale models of the stage were made with meticulous care before each new performance to demonstrate to the stagehands how backdrops and props would work. Colours had to be striking to ensure that they could be seen throughout the theatre, standing out when artificial lights shone on them. ‘Cut outs’ of trees and vehicles were common props.
