Poster for evening entertainment at the Canterbury Theatre of Varieties
Printer: Smith, Walter
The Canterbury Theatre of Varieties was the first of the great music halls. Opened in 1851 and reconstructed in 1876, the three-tier theatre had a grand entrance hall, promenade and lounge and a remarkable sliding roof.
This poster from July 1884 lists a typically wide variety of acts - there might sometimes be as many as 50 in one evening. Well known names such as Jenny Hill, famous in her own day for her energetic style of singing and dancing, is listed alongside acrobats, comedians, and even the lion-tamers Colonel Boone and Miss Carlotta with their den of five performing lions.
