Printer: Charles Dickens & Evans Crystal Palace Press
This poster advertises balloon stunts at Crystal Palace. The first successful balloon ascent in England was made in 1784 by Vincent Lunardi, an Italian and secretary to the Neopolitan ambassador. The popularity of ballooning persisted well in to the 19th century. Adeline Stuart was an American aerialist who performed as Leona Dare. She was famous of her 'jaws of steel' act, in which she ascended above the crowds in a balloon with a trapeze attached, performing many stunts while holding the trapeze between her teeth.
