A well known comic singer and actor, Herbert Campbell is one of the performers advertised as appearing at the South London Palace. He is credited as the originator of the ‘Pantomime Dame’, and with inspiring later comics like Les Dawson. He impersonated women, wearing floral dresses, wigs and padding. He often appeared with Dan Leno, perhaps the greatest Victorian variety entertainer, who bore the brunt of many of Campbell's jokes.
