The Canterbury Theatre of Varieties was the first of the great music halls. It staged a wide variety of acts from magicians and jugglers to poets and comic singers, with a sometimes surprisingly large number included in one evening. A typically full programme is advertised on this poster.

Many well known names are listed including Mr Herbert Campbell (1844-1904), a large and jolly red-faced comedian who for many years partnered the much loved Dan Leno (1860-1904). Also listed is Miss Jenny Hill (1851-1896), known as the "Vital Spark" and loved for her energetic performances and sparkling wit, and Mr. James Fawn, a singer of comic songs remembered for 'Ask a Policeman', which he sang in 1890.
