This poster for the Canterbury Theatre of Varieties advertises a benefit matinee for J A Tressidder, held to raise funds for a voyage to Australia ordered by his doctor. Benefit shows were sometimes held as frequently as two or three times a week to provide needy performers with some financial assistance at a time when, due to ill health or other misfortune, they were unable to work. The artistes featured on a benefit programme would not be paid, so only the most successful artistes who could afford to waive their perfomance fees would appear. Among those on this benefit programme are such major stars of the English music hall as Dan Leno (1860-1904), Charles Godfrey (1851-1900), and Marie Lloyd (1870-1922). All proceeds from the entertainment would have been donated to assist J A Tressidder. Prices of tickets, food and drink might have been doubled, or even trebled, to ensure a considerable amount of money was raised.
