The Canterbury Theatre of Varieties was the first of the great music halls. It staged a wide variety of acts from comic and musical sketches to acrobats and gymnasts, as can be seen in this poster from 1892 for the Easter holiday entertainment. Among the many artistes listed is Tom Costello (1863-1945), a handsome singer famous in his own day for such naval songs as 'Comrades'. At a time when Britain was at the height of her prosperity, patriotic songs sung by artistes in naval or army uniform proved particularly popular in the halls. However, Tom Costello is perhaps better remembered as a hen-pecked husband in 'At Trinity Church I met me doom'!
