This poster for the South London Palace highlights the fact that the theatre is "Lighted throughout by electricity". Electricity was first used in London to light lamposts along the Embankment in 1878. Gradually, as technology developed, it became cheaper and cleaner to produce than gas.

As well as employing the most popular artists on the stage, music hall owners had to be seen to use the latest technologies, and decorate their halls in the most fashionable ways, in order to attract audiences.
