Poster for the Royal Victoria Coffee Hall 1136
Printer: Williams & Strahan
Medium: Print on paper
This poster features a group of minstrels playing at The Royal Victorian Hall. Minstrels had painted black faces, and entertained audiences by dancing and playing the banjo. The Moore and Burgess Minstrels started out under the name ‘Christies’ and composed of 12 members but by the 1870s there were only 2 members left, Pony Moore and Frederick Burgess. They started their own group and became very successful. The Mohawk Minstrels were a well established group who played in the Agricultural Hall, for this particular event the different groups came together to perform.
