The concert advertised on this poster was held to raise funds for the Metropolitan and City Police Orphanage. Based at Strawberry Hill in Twickenham, this charity was established in 1870 to aid the children of dead or disabled policemen. The regime in the orphanage was very rigorous, with long lessons, strict discipline and very basic food: just one slice of bread and dripping for breakfast.

At the same time, it was an innovative institution. In an era of widespread hardship for children in general, and orphans in particular, these children were assured food, clothing, education and training. In later years there was even a swimming pool and a cinema. When children left they had apprenticeship training and employment was usually found for them.
