Poster advertising the Tivoli Theatre of Varieties
Printer: David Allen & Son
Medium: Print on paper
One of the performers advertised on this Tivoli Theatre poster is Charles Godfrey. A respected dramatic actor on the London stage, he turned to variety at the midpoint of his career. One of the most successful parts of his act was a song called called ‘On Guard’. In it he played a neglected old soldier, highlighting the plight of many soldiers who had fought for their country only to be subsequently abandoned and ignored. During the Crimean War, the government's War Office banned the song as unpatriotic. Godfrey later specialised in playing men-about-town, singing songs such as 'Hi-tiddly-hi-ti' and 'The Masher King'.
