Political leaflet campaigning for the release of a prisoner from Holloway Jail
Printer: Knott, W
Medium: Print on paper
This is a political leaflet was issued by the Church of England Working Men’s Society, demanding the release from prison of the Reverend T Pelham Dale, rector of St Vedast Church in London. The Reverend Dale was incarcerated for disobeying the Public Worship Regulation Act of 1874. The Act prohibited from all Anglican churches any fixture or practice that could be described as 'ritualistic'. This included stained-glass windows, stations of the cross, and ornate decorations. The Act was drawn up in response to a resurgence of Catholicism in Britain, and the adoption by individual Anglican churches of decorations and features more usually associated with the Catholic Church.
