Chinese woodblock-printed 'Life of the Buddha' with hand-coloured illustations, made in 1808. The Buddha is depicted, just after his miraculous birth, taking seven steps. Buddhism came to China about 2000 years ago and became a popular faith. Illustrated books telling the life of the Buddha, such as this, were printed in large numbers.
