Lotus Sutra
This lavishly decorated manuscript of the eighth chapter of the 'Lotus Sutra', written in gold on indigo-dyed paper, originally formed part of a set commissioned by the Japanese Emperor, Go-Mizunoo (1596-1680) to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the death of his grandfather-in-law, the Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542-1616). On completion in 1636, the set of twenty-eight manuscripts was presented to the Toshogu Shrine in Nikko, site of Ieyasu's mausoleum.
