This folio comes from a Franco-German 'Pentateuch' with prophetical readings and the Five Scrolls made between the 13th and 14th centuries. The manuscript contains the 'Torah', the five books of Moses, which is regarded as the most sacred text in Judaism. Shown here is the opening to the 'Book of Numbers' displaying the initial word, Va-yedaber - meaning "And the Lord said..." - in calligraphic script, framed by an elaborate design in minute lettering, called micrography, which uses the textual notes known as the 'masorah'.
