Decisions of Isiah of Trani the Younger, 1374. Illuminated page showing measuring of the eruv.
The Italian Code of the Law is known as 'The decisions of Isaiah ben Elijah di Trani, the Younger'. This copy was produced in Italy in 1374. The manuscript abounds in finely illuminated borders, decorated word panels and textual illustrations executed in rich shades of pink, red and brilliant blue, the predominant hue. It was copied by Jekuthiel ben Solomon for his teacher Menahem ben Nathan. The miniature on this folio shows a man marking out an 'eruv' - a boundary for the Sabbath.
