A view in ink of Hexham Abbey and College in Northumberland. Located at the centre of the town, Hexham Abbey was founded by St Wilfred in AD674. Like many Saxon churches in the area, it was constructed from stones taken from Hadrian's Wall. The crypt is all that remains of the original building, and Roman inscriptions can still be seen on some of the stones there. The present building dates mostly from the 12th century, and remains the parish church of Hexham.
