Thomas Hoccleve (1369?-1426) composed this work in 1411 or 1412 and dedicated it to Henry V, while he was still prince of Wales, before his coronation in 1413. The illuminated initial on this page contains an escutcheon with Henry's arms as Prince, and there is a miniature of a prince on a later page, which may suggest that it was made before Henry's coronation, or may simply show that the artist knew that the text was dedicated to a prince, not a king.
