This manuscript was originally compiled in 1380 by Thomas Walsingham, the precentor of the Benedictine abbey of St. Albans, as a record of those who had made gifts to the abbey. The five laymen and one laywoman are each shown holding a grant of land: a charter with a red or green wax pendant seal. The artist would not have known what the individuals looked like, but has tried to vary their representations by different head-gear, colour of hair, etc.
