A pontifical has instructions for the performance of all the sacraments conducted by a bishop. These episcopal services are often complex with prayers, hymns and processions. This pontifical belonged to the medieval cathedral of St Mungo, in Glasgow. It has early musical notation for hymns. After a bishop is elected and ordained, a special mass is celebrated. This page begins the instructions and prayers for the special mass, with instructions written in red and the words of prayers and hymns in black. Sometimes the instructions offer alternatives. Here one of the instructions starts, "If there is time."
