A pontifical has instructions for the performance of all the sacraments conducted by a bishop. These episcopal services are often complex with prayers, hymns and processions. This pontifical belonged to the medieval cathedral of St Mungo, in Glasgow. It has early musical notation for hymns. After a bishop's ordination, a special mass is said. This page is gives prayers, hymns, instructions and readings for the mass. Instructions are written in red, while the words to be recited are in black. The red letter 'K' and note in the margin indicate the point for reading from the epistles. Near the end of the page, the large red inscription marks the point for the reading from the Gospel of John 10 ( the Good Shepherd).
