Queens Aethelswitha and Aethelflaed, In The Cartulary And Customs Of Abingdon Abbey

Medium: Ink, pigments and gold on vellum
Date: 1220

Most cartularies have minimal decoration, if any, and thus this one is exceptionally lavish, having a series of illuminated 'portraits'. On this page charters granted by Queen Ealhswith (died 902), wife of King Alfred the Great, and of Queen Aethelflaed, daughter of Alfred and Ealhswith, are each illustrated with images of the enthroned queen.
