The Start Of A History Of The Foundation Of St. Peter's Abbey, Gloucester

The Start Of A History Of The Foundation Of St. Peter's Abbey, Gloucester

Medium: Ink and pigments on vellum

Date: 1450

Shelfmark: Cotton MS Domitian A. VIII

Item number: f.126v

Genre: Illuminated manuscript

This manuscript is probably a copy of an earlier one, now in the library at The Queen's College, Oxford. As the text concerns the history, and the rights and privileges, of this particular abbey, it is unlikely that they would have been written anywhere else. The use of green initials and paragraph marks is unusual: it is a colour whose use in English manuscripts died out around the early 13th century, an was revived in the 15th, but usually in combination with blue and red.
