The Years 1253-1255, In The Annals Of Dover Priory

Medium: Ink and pigments on vellum
Date: 1286

This series of annals have a very marked emphasis on events relating either to 'national' events (such as coronations and deaths of the kings of England), or to 'local' events concerning Dover and Canterbury. The annals were therefore clearly compiled somewhere in Kent, and the presence in this manuscript of a press-mark of Dover priory leaves no doubt as to precisely where. As the annals get closer to the date at which they were written down, they become fuller and more detailed. This page contains notes for the years 1253, 1254 and the start of 1255. Most of the entry for 1253 is a transcript of the oath of profession of Guy, 15th prior of Dover.
