The Cartulary Of Reading Abbey was discovered by a bricklayer in 1792, in a cavity in a wall at a house in Shinfield, just outside Reading. It was probably hidden for safekeeping during the Reformation, when a secretly Catholic family lived there. 'These are the books which are kept in Leominster church', states the rubric at the top of this list. Leominster was a cell of Reading, but it is unusual to find one abbey keeping a record of the books physically kept at another.
