These annals were clearly written for the Benedictine abbey of St. John the Baptist, Colchester: several entries, including the first one on the left-hand page, relate to the abbey and its abbots. The long inscription written across the lower margin of both pages is marked with a black cross, tying it to the annal for the year 1120. Between them, they explain that the founder of the abbey, Eudo Dapifer, was buried in the chapter-house, and then transferred to the new presbytery, exactly 200 years later, in 1320.
