Of the writings of Peter Lombard (born in Lombardy c. 1100, died as archbishop of Paris in 1160) the most famous was his Sentences, a systematic compendium of theology in four books. The left column has the end of a list of chapters, and the main text starts at the top of the right column with a large decorated initial 'C'. It uses a metal-based pigment, which altered chemically over time to a metallic appearance, as well as gold, which does not tarnish and was therefore used more often.
