This manuscript is referred to in a medieval chronicle of the Benedictine abbey at St. Albans: it was commissioned by prior Robert under abbot John (1195-1214). It was appropriated by abbot William and deposited in the abbey library, when he deposed prior Robert in 1215. Alexander Nequam died in 1217, so this copy of his De Naturis Rerum (On the Nature of Things) was written during his lifetime. At the top edge of the leaf in red is a typical St. Albans ownership inscription and anathema.
