In 1380 the Franciscan John Somour (or Somor) drew up for Joan, princess of Wales, mother of King Richard II, a series of tables relating to the calculation of moveable feasts and astronomical phenomena. These tables, and Somour's dedication to Princess Joan, are found in about a dozen manuscripts in the British Library. The present example has variants that show it to have been made for use in St. George's Priory, Dunster, a few miles south of Minehead, in Somerset. These diagrams illustrate different partial and total eclipses of the sun (eclipses of the moon are overleaf). Each diagram has an accompanying note and a date in medieval arabic numerals, from 1384 (top left diagram) to 1433 (lower right diagram).
