Clerics Singing, In A Historiated Initial, In 'The Grandisson Psalter'

Medium: Ink, pigments and gold on vellum

Date: 1275

Shelfmark: Additional MS 21926

Item number: f.132v

Genre: Illuminated manuscript

This Psalter is named after one of its owners, John Grandisson, who was bishop of Exeter from 1327 until his death in 1369. It was adapted for his use, having originally been made for someone who perhaps lived in the area of Chichester. Psalm 97 begins 'O sing unto the Lord a new song' and is often illustrated in Psalters, as here, by a group of clerics singing at a lectern. The seated, cowled figure to the right, however, does not usually appear, and is unidentified.
